This is a structured, 24-month workplace experience program designed to give unemployed graduates meaningful exposure to the full breadth of engineering operations within the PGM industry — from concentrator and smelting operations through to precious metals refining. If you are a driven, curious, and technically sound Chemical Engineering graduate looking to launch your career in one of South Africa’s most dynamic mining environments, this opportunity is for you.

About the Program

The Implats Graduate Internship Program is purpose-built to bridge the gap between academic qualification and professional practice. Over the course of 24 months, interns are immersed in technical, operational, safety, and managerial aspects of engineering within a live production environment. The program equips graduates with the practical competencies and industry knowledge required to thrive in the PGM sector and beyond.

Interns will be stationed across Implats operations, gaining hands-on exposure to Concentrator Operations, Smelting Operations, the Precious Metals Refinery (PMR), and the Base Metals Refinery (BMR). This broad operational exposure ensures that graduates develop a well-rounded understanding of the entire PGM value chain.

Key Responsibilities

Participants in the program will be expected to complete all components of the 24-month structured training plan, which includes participation in all required training and development interventions, compilation and submission of regular training reports, and provision of technical engineering support to operational areas. Interns will also be encouraged to contribute meaningfully to continuous improvement initiatives by bringing fresh, innovative thinking to technical and business challenges.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for the program, applicants must hold a completed NQF Level 7 qualification in Chemical Engineering or Metallurgy, with a sound knowledge of Chemical Engineering and/or Metallurgical principles. Applicants must be currently unemployed and must not have previously participated in any graduate internship program.
