Alstom is a global leader in the transportation sector, driving greener and smarter mobility worldwide through high-speed trains, metros, trams, e-buses, integrated systems, and digital mobility solutions, operating across 63 countries. Bombela Maintenance, a subsidiary of Alstom, employs 160 people united by a single goal: becoming the best railway maintenance company in the country, committed to delivering a safe, reliable Gautrain service every single day.
Bombela Maintenance is now recruiting two Trainee Technicians to join its team at the Gautrain Maintenance Depot in Midrand, Johannesburg. This is an excellent opportunity for young, qualified South Africans looking to build a career in the rail and engineering maintenance sector with one of the world’s most respected transportation companies.
Purpose of the Role
The successful candidates will provide essential support to the production team, helping to ensure safe, reliable, and available trains in line with customer requirements. This will be achieved primarily through preventative maintenance and corrective repairs carried out under guidance and supervision.
Key Responsibilities
As a Trainee Technician, your duties will include:
Ensuring full compliance with safety and quality rules and regulations at all times. Assisting the maintenance team with preventative maintenance tasks on rolling stock and related equipment. Supporting corrective maintenance activities whenever required. Carrying out basic MAXIMO administration duties as part of maintenance record-keeping. Making correct and safe use of materials, tools, and equipment. Working effectively as part of a team while demonstrating strong self-management. Being available to work shifts, which may include weekends, night work, overtime, and public holidays, in line with operational requirements.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered:
A Grade 12 certificate. An S4 or N6 National Certificate, excluding subjects P1 and P2. Rail or production experience will be considered an advantage. Physically fit and robust, given the practical, hands-on nature of the role. South African citizenship is required. Ability to see in colour. Ability to work at heights, where required. Good hearing, as the role involves exposure to noise in a depot environment.
Why Join Bombela Maintenance
This role offers more than just a job; it offers the chance to be part of a team that keeps one of South Africa’s most important public transport systems running safely and reliably every day. As the company puts it, you don’t need to be a train enthusiast to thrive here, but you will feel proud every time you or your loved ones step onto a Gautrain. For school leavers or young technicians with an N6 qualification looking to gain real, practical experience in railway maintenance, this is a strong entry point into a stable, technically rewarding industry backed by a global organisation.
