The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is offering two Mechanical Engineering Internship positions based in Cottesloe, Johannesburg, through its Mandela Mining Precinct, hosted within the CSIR Business Excellence and Integration portfolio. This is an eighteen-month contract opportunity for graduates seeking practical, hands-on work experience.
About the Role
Successful candidates will be seconded from the Mandela Mining Precinct to the Mining Cluster, where they will gain operational and project-based experience under the guidance of senior engineers and management within cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Work as part of the operational and maintenance teams of the CSIR Mining Laboratories under the supervision of the Senior Engineer and Laboratory Manager
- Gain hands-on experience in the operational processes of CSIR facilities that provide testing and training services to the mining industry
- Gain hands-on experience in the maintenance function of the laboratories as part of the maintenance team
- Identify opportunities for process and equipment improvements, and undertake a project to develop and implement approved initiatives for the Mining Laboratories
- Prepare reports and presentations to share work outcomes with management
- Present results when required
- Perform general administrative duties as assigned by the team leader
- Apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills with close attention to detail
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- A National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
- A Bachelor of Technology or bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering will be an added advantage
- Experience in mechanical testing of metallic materials and/or components is advantageous
- Experience in underground mining operations is advantageous

- Willing to learn and work under pressure
- Administratively skilled, with the ability to plan, coordinate, and maintain structured work routines
- Proactive and focused, with a strong sense of urgency and accuracy
- In possession of a clear criminal record
Applicants with international qualifications must submit an evaluation report or certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Shortlisted candidates will also be subject to a prescribed medical test/assessment, as required in the mining sector.
