ACTOM (Pty) Ltd | Bedfordview, Gauteng | Closing Date: 24 April 2026

ACTOM Power Systems (APS), a business unit within the ACTOM Engineering Projects & Contracts (EPC) division of ACTOM (Pty) Limited, is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Engineer in Training (Site Based). This is a twelve-month, site-based training opportunity designed to equip graduates with the practical technical and construction management skills required to build a meaningful and rewarding career in the electrical infrastructure sector.

ACTOM has been a cornerstone of South Africa’s engineering landscape since 1903. APS specialises in turnkey solutions across the electrical infrastructure sector, including AIS and GIS substation construction, renewable electrical balance of plant installations, and the rehabilitation, extension, and upgrading of existing substations ranging from 6.6kV to 400kV. The business unit offers an all-inclusive, one-stop service underpinned by ACTOM’s extensive group capabilities — making it one of the most comprehensive and respected names in the transmission and substation construction space.

About the Opportunity

This twelve-month programme places successful candidates directly on active transmission construction project sites, where they will gain hands-on experience across all key technical and construction site management disciplines. The programme is structured to prepare trainees for positions of responsibility within the organisation upon successful completion, offering a genuine launchpad for a long-term career in electrical engineering and infrastructure development.

What You Will Learn

Trainees will be exposed to a broad range of construction and engineering disciplines, including:

  • Substation and transmission line design and construction activities
  • Construction management and execution
  • Activity scheduling and progress control
  • Quality management
  • Construction risk management
  • Health, safety, and environmental management on construction sites
  • Resource management and cost control
  • Coordination and effective communication
  • Documentation and reporting

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must hold an Electrical Engineering qualification — either a National Diploma or a Bachelor’s Degree — and have between 0 and 2 years of experience in the electrical engineering or energy field. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

Candidates must be computer literate and proficient in MS Excel and MS Projects. Beyond the technical requirements, ACTOM Power Systems is looking for individuals who demonstrate strong communication skills and assertiveness, a responsible and self-disciplined work ethic, the ability to function effectively as part of a team, a safety-conscious mindset, and a consistently positive attitude.

Critically, candidates must be willing and able to work on site, away from home, for extended periods. The nature of transmission construction projects means that site-based work is an integral part of this role, and flexibility in this regard is non-negotiable.

Preference will be given to candidates in line with ACTOM’s employment equity commitments.

Commencement Date: 01 June 2026
