Are you currently in Grade 12 and passionate about a career in the Built Environment? H&I Construction, a Cape Town based civil and building contractor, invites interested 2026 Grade 12 learners to apply for the 2027 Matric Gap Year Programme.

This is an opportunity to gain valuable practical, on-site experience, explore different disciplines within the construction industry, and build a strong foundation for future studies and a career.

Programme Exposure

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to gain exposure to various disciplines within the Built Environment, including:

• Civil Engineering and Construction Works
• Structural Concrete Works
• Renewable Energy and Solar Power
• Quantity Surveying
• Commercial Building
• Marine, Water and Sanitation
• Surveying
• Health, Safety and Environmental
• Mechanical and Electrical

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

• Be currently enrolled in Grade 12 in 2026
• Be a South African Citizen
• Achieve a minimum of 65% for Pure or Technical Mathematics and Physical Science
• Be willing to take a “GAP YEAR” in 2027
• Be willing to relocate anywhere within South Africa for the duration of the programme
• Meet the admission requirements to study either Civil Engineering, Construction, Surveying, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, or Quantity Surveying

Recognised Qualifications

Candidates may be considered for bursary support towards the following qualifications:

• Bachelor of Engineering (BEng)
• Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSc Engineering)
• Bachelor in Engineering Technology (BEngTech)

Bursary Opportunities

Successful completion of the Gap Year Programme may provide candidates with the opportunity to be considered for a bursary to pursue tertiary studies. Final bursary selections will be made at the discretion of H&I Construction. Bursary awards will be based on:

• Overall performance during the Gap Year Programme
• Acceptance into an approved tertiary institution and qualifying study programme
• H&I Construction’s operational requirements and available opportunities
