AMSOL is looking for a Trainee Cable Jointer to join its team in Cape Town. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a technical background in electrical or telecommunications work who is looking to build a specialised career in submarine cable jointing and marine operations.

The successful candidate will gain hands-on exposure to submarine cable systems, working aboard cable ships and barges as well as on onshore routes. You’ll develop expertise in splicing and jointing technologies while contributing to practical training modules and maintaining accurate operational documentation.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Build expertise in the splicing field, including UJ documentation and specialised equipment
• Contribute meaningfully to the development of practical training modules
• Work proficiently with information systems related to the role
• Joint submarine cables during deployments on cable ships, barges, and onshore routes
• Maintain and develop skills across different connection technologies through ongoing training and courses
• Maintain an event log and assist in drafting operation reports
• Carry out monitoring tasks depending on the operation type, including cable loading/offloading, equipment transfers between vessel and depot or splicing laboratory, cable length tracking, and section identification
• Liaise with the Splicing Team Leader to help maintain splicing premises on vessels and in the laboratory, and support maintenance and calibration of splicing equipment
• Provide support in the laying room or on the work deck, and assist other onboard departments as required
• Learn and apply safety procedures related to high-voltage cable systems (up to 12kV DC) and marine working environments, including installing ISR gear before repairs begin
• Maintain excellent housekeeping standards in all working areas

Desired Experience & Qualification

• National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or a related field
• Matric (Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science) with relevant experience will also be considered
• Good manual dexterity and attention to detail
• Ability to follow written procedures and construction manuals rigorously
• Good physical condition, able to pass SAMSA medical standards
• Openness to different working cultures, communication styles, and professional practices from colleagues of various nationalities
