Position Overview

Are you an unemployed engineering or technical graduate looking to break into the green economy? The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, supported by the International Labour Organization (ILO), invites 20 unemployed graduates to participate in the Just Transition Skills Programme.

This initiative is tailored to equip young professionals with practical, industry-ready skills to launch their careers in South Africa’s growing Electric Vehicle (EV) and Battery Management System (BMS) value chains.

Programme Structure

The programme spans 4 to 6 months and consists of two primary phases:

1. Training Phase (Month 1): Intensive technical instruction delivered through uYilo. Note: Physical training takes place over 2 days in Summerstrand. Candidates must arrange their own transport for these two days.
2. Work-Integrated Learning Phase (Months 2–6): Practical internship placement within prominent Business Chamber Member companies across the manufacturing and industrial sectors.

Key Learning Areas & Responsibilities

Participants will be trained to perform as junior technicians, technologists, and technical support personnel, focusing on:

• EV Architecture: Principles of electric motors, power controllers, converters, and charging infrastructure.
• Battery Systems: Battery chemistry, pack structures, Battery Management System (BMS) operation, and critical safety protocols.
• Technical Maintenance: Interpreting electrical/mechanical schematics, performing baseline diagnostics, testing, and troubleshooting under supervision.
• Data & Reporting: Utilizing digital tools (MS Office / Google Workspace) to track operational metrics, capture data, and generate field reports.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for selection, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Citizenship: South African Citizen.
• Age: Between 18 and 35 years old.
• Employment Status: Currently unemployed and available for the full 4 to 6-month duration.
• Education: Completed NQF Level 5 qualification or higher in any of the following fields:
  • Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, or Electromechanical Engineering
  • Mechatronics or Automotive Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering or Renewable Energy
  • Any related technical qualification containing substantial electrical or mechanical content
• Documentation: Ability to provide a certified qualification certificate and full academic transcript.

• Strong problem-solving mindset with a willingness to learn emerging green technologies.
• High numerical reasoning and technical comprehension.
• Responsible handling of technical equipment and testing gear.
