WSP’s Power & Energy team in Midrand is looking for a Graduate Engineer – Overhead Lines to join its transmission and distribution infrastructure practice. This is a structured graduate opportunity for a Mechanical, Civil or Structural Engineering graduate ready to build a career in overhead line design, working alongside experienced specialists on projects that support South Africa’s energy future.
About the Role
The successful candidate will contribute to overhead transmission and distribution line projects from feasibility and route studies through to detailed design and construction support. Over time, you will build practical capability in line profiling, sag-and-tension assessment, tower and pole spotting, structural loading, foundations, clearances, and multidisciplinary coordination.
Key Responsibilities
- Support feasibility, concept and detailed design for overhead transmission and distribution lines
- Assist with route studies, line profiling, tower or pole spotting, sag-and-tension calculations, clearances and loading assessments
- Develop proficiency in PLS-CADD and related overhead line design software
- Support the analysis and detailing of towers, poles, cross-arms, gantries, stays, anchors and foundations
- Coordinate survey, geotechnical, environmental, electrical, structural and civil engineering inputs
- Prepare calculations, drawings, reports, specifications, bills of quantities and schedules under technical supervision
- Participate in design reviews, site visits, inspections and construction support while applying project safety and quality requirements
Requirements
- A BEng or BSc Eng degree in Mechanical, Civil or Structural Engineering from an ECSA-accredited institution, or an equivalent recognised qualification
- Recent graduates or final-year students who will have completed their qualification before starting
- Sound knowledge of structural analysis, mechanics, materials, loading, engineering mathematics and design principles
- A genuine interest in power transmission infrastructure and overhead line engineering
- Basic proficiency in engineering calculation, drafting or modelling tools; exposure to AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, structural analysis software or PLS-CADD is advantageous
- Eligibility and willingness to register with ECSA as a Candidate Engineer, working toward professional registration
- Willingness to travel to project sites when required
