The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) Transport Department is inviting applications from suitably qualified students residing within the City of Johannesburg for an internship in Transport Systems Management. This is a structured, work-based learning opportunity that runs for a period not exceeding 18 months, and is designed to give interns meaningful, hands-on exposure to the planning and management of urban transport systems in one of Africa’s most dynamic metropolitan environments.
This internship is ideal for students who are currently enrolled in, or have recently completed, a Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering, Town and Regional Planning, or Transport Management. Candidates must have completed at least their first year of study (two full semesters) and must hold a Grade 12 certificate at NQF Level 4. Only residents of the City of Johannesburg will be considered for this position.
Successful interns will be based at 75 Helen Joseph Street, Old Mutual Building, Johannesburg, and will work within the Transport Systems Management branch of the Transport Department. The remuneration offered is R10 109,86 per month for candidates who have completed a qualification with a minimum of 360 credits, or R3 500,00 per month for those still enrolled as students. No benefits are included.
The primary purpose of this internship is to give participants practical experience in transport planning, development planning, and the implementation of transport policy and regulations. Interns will be integrated into a working environment that directly influences how Johannesburg manages and develops its transportation infrastructure.
Day-to-day responsibilities will include contributing to the development and management of strategies aimed at improving the overall performance of the city’s transportation system. This includes, among other things, the evaluation of traffic impact studies for developments generating more than 1 500 vehicle trips. Interns will also assist in the development of nodal transport plans across the CoJ, support the development and implementation of transport policy — such as the Security Access Restrictions Policy — and participate in stakeholder consultation processes for various projects and programmes managed by the unit.
To succeed in this role, candidates should demonstrate strong computer literacy, particularly in MS Office applications. They will need to be well-organised, detail-oriented, and able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats. The ability to manage time efficiently and perform well under pressure is essential, as interns will be working within a fast-paced metropolitan government environment.
From a technical standpoint, a foundational understanding of Traffic Engineering Theory and Development Planning will be advantageous, along with some exposure to technical report writing.
This internship is open to first-time participants only — candidates who have previously participated in any internship programme are not eligible to apply. Applications must be submitted online. Attach a certified copy of your qualification(s), a certified copy of your ID, and an updated CV. Use Google Chrome when applying via the CoJ portal.

INTERNSHIP: QUANTITY SURVEYOR — CITY OF JOHANNESBURG TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT
The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) Transport Department, Infrastructure Branch, is looking for a graduate Quantity Surveyor to join its team as an intern for a period not exceeding 18 months. This is an exceptional opportunity for a recently graduated Quantity Surveying professional to gain structured, practical exposure to large-scale public transport infrastructure projects within one of South Africa’s largest metropolitan municipalities.
This position is suited to candidates who hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Quantity Surveying at NQF Level 7. A Matric/Grade 12 Certificate is also required. No prior work experience is necessary — the internship is structured specifically to provide entry-level exposure to the built environment and transport infrastructure sector. As with all CoJ internship opportunities, only residents of the City of Johannesburg will be considered.
The successful intern will earn a monthly stipend of R10 109,86 (basic salary, no benefits) and will be based primarily at 75 Helen Joseph Street, Old Mutual Building, Johannesburg. However, the role may also require the intern to operate from various regions across the city where the CoJ is actively implementing Public Transport Infrastructure Programmes.
The primary function of this internship is to prepare and review quantities for transport infrastructure programmes. These programmes include the development and maintenance of Taxi Ranks, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations, roadways, and Non-Motorised Transport Facilities. The intern will be responsible for the measurement of quantities during the preparation of Interim Payment Certificates and will assist in monitoring invoices related to claims submitted by Implementing Agents.
Key learning areas within this role are structured around four core performance dimensions: progress (ensuring deliverables are completed within specified timelines), cost (tracking that work is executed within approved budgets), performance or earned value (verifying that the value of progress aligns with expenditure), and risk (proactively identifying and managing foreseeable project risks throughout implementation).
Successful candidates must be numerate, analytical, and capable of applying sound problem-solving skills in a project environment. Negotiation skills will also be an asset. From a technical standpoint, strong proficiency in MS Excel is essential, as much of the quantity and cost tracking work is spreadsheet-based. Interns are expected to demonstrate a commitment to teamwork, integrity, attention to detail, and quality. A service-delivery mindset aligned with Batho Pele principles is also expected, as this role directly supports the delivery of public infrastructure to Johannesburg communities.
Applications must be submitted online only. Attach your certified qualification(s), certified ID copy, and updated CV. Apply using Google Chrome.
