The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is inviting applications from suitably qualified and passionate candidates to join its team as a Junior Researcher / Research Intern on a National Department of Agriculture Funded Project focused on biomass, bioenergy, and alternative energy systems. This is an exceptional opportunity for a driven science or engineering graduate to gain hands-on research experience within one of South Africa’s premier agricultural research institutions.
About the Role
As a Junior Researcher / Research Intern, you will work closely with the Project Manager and a multidisciplinary team to plan, execute, and report on cutting-edge research activities related to renewable and alternative energy technologies. You will be embedded in a dynamic research environment that bridges agricultural science with sustainable energy innovation — contributing directly to South Africa’s green energy future.
This role offers meaningful exposure to the full research project lifecycle, from technical planning and site fieldwork through to data management, report writing, and stakeholder engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in a National Department of Agriculture Funded Project, contributing to technical activity plans in collaboration with the Project Manager.
- Conduct site visitations, capture field data accurately, and uphold strict data quality control protocols throughout all research activities.
- Prepare detailed technical specifications for biomass, bioenergy, and other alternative energy systems and technologies.
- Assist in the procurement process, including compiling and managing project-related purchases.
- Compile comprehensive technical reports and submit them for review and approval within agreed timelines.
- Utilise, operate, and maintain research facilities, laboratory apparatus, and equipment in accordance with institutional standards.
- Actively participate in sectional meetings, seminars, and workshops to share knowledge and stay current with developments in the field.
- Ensure full compliance with Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) regulations and all relevant safety procedures at all times.
Minimum Requirements
- A relevant BSc or BTech Degree in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Energy Studies, or an Engineering discipline.
- Candidates must have the intent to pursue further studies (Honours or Master’s level).
- A strong interest in renewable energy and sustainable technologies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within a team.
- A valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage.
Additional Information
A competitive remuneration package will be offered, commensurate with the scope, responsibilities, and stature of the position. The appointment will be subject to a positive security clearance, as well as competency and leadership assessments. Permanent appointments are subject to a six (6) month probation period. The organisation reserves the right not to make an appointment.
