The Department of Employment and Labour is inviting applications from suitably qualified and dynamic individuals to fill the position of OHS Inspector based at the Labour Centre in Upington, Northern Cape. This is an exciting opportunity to play a critical role in safeguarding the health and safety of workers across the region by ensuring employer compliance with South Africa’s occupational health and safety legislation.
About the Role
As an OHS Inspector, you will operate with a high degree of independence, conducting thorough inspections of workplaces to ensure full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993, its regulations, and all incorporated South African National Standards. You will be at the forefront of protecting workers’ rights and wellbeing, investigating incidents and complaints, and taking decisive enforcement action where necessary.
This role demands a self-motivated professional who is equally comfortable working in the field as they are compiling detailed analytical reports and engaging in community advocacy.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and independently conduct workplace inspections to monitor and enforce compliance with the OHS Act, associated regulations, and relevant labour legislation
- Investigate and finalise incidents and complaints pertaining to the OHS Act independently, and appear in Court as a State witness where required
- Execute proactive inspections according to scheduled plans and compile consolidated reports from findings
- Plan and conduct advocacy campaigns on all applicable labour legislation, analyse their impact, and compile comprehensive reports
- Contribute to the planning, drafting, and maintenance of regional inspection plans, and compile consolidated statistical reports on regional and allocated cases
Minimum Requirements
- Senior Certificate plus a three-year tertiary qualification (NQF Level 6) in any of the following fields: Environmental Health, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Construction, Biology, Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, or Biochemistry
- A valid driver’s licence is essential
Knowledge required: Departmental policies and procedures, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, South African National Standards, the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, and the Unemployment Insurance Act.
Skills required: Planning and organising, communication, computer literacy, facilitation, interpersonal skills, conflict handling, negotiation, problem-solving, interviewing, presentation, innovation, and analytical ability.

R397 116 per annum
